South African Police Service member competes in World Darts Championships

Sgt Charles Losper, 38 yrs old, a member of an elite unit called the “Western Cape Flying Squad” took on two-time World Darts Champion, John Part from Canada, in the World Championships in Alexandra Palace in the UK on Friday, 21 December 2007.

But facing the Canadian in front of a crowd of 2000 darts fans with lots of TV cameras around didn’t scare him off. He lost against the Canadian 3-1 but was given a standing ovation by the crowd for his persistent way of staying on the heels of John Part. Sgt Losper, who won the Emperor’s Palace PDC South African Opens in Johannesburg in September, earned himself this well deserved place in the World Championships. He also played in the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton from 18 November to 25 November 2007 where he faced three tough opponents. He took out Andy Hamilton in the first round, Vincent van der Voort from Holland in the second round and lost in the third round against Terry Jenkins from England.

“We do have a lot of potential players in South Africa but was never afforded the opportunity and now that we do get that opportunity we make full use of it.” Hopefully with the coverage from Supersport in South Africa and the Emperors Palace, a lot of businesses will now come on board to sponsor us as dart players.
Charles Losper will again be playing in the Maseru Sun tournament in Lesotho in April and in the PDC Australian Opens in Australia in August 2008.Good luck and all the best for the future Charles.
